How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
Reviewed and updated August 21, 2026
Page numbers make long documents easier to reference in print and review.
Steps
- Open Add Page Numbers
- Upload your PDF
- Choose position and starting number
- Apply and download
Plan numbering before applying it
Decide whether the cover should display a number, what number the first numbered page should use, and whether numbering belongs at the top or bottom. Reports with front matter may start visible numbering after the title and contents pages.
Choose a readable position
- Avoid placing numbers over existing footer text
- Use the same position throughout the document
- Leave enough margin for printing and binding
- Check both portrait and landscape pages
Number the final merged document
If several PDFs will become one report, merge and organize them first. Apply page numbers to the completed sequence so numbers remain continuous and do not need to be recreated after pages move.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can page numbering begin with a number other than 1?
Use the starting-number option shown in the tool to continue numbering from another document or section.
Will page numbers cover existing content?
They can if the source page has a crowded header or footer. Preview placement and choose the clearest available position.
